Google opens enrolment for Registered App Stores to enable one‑tap Android installs
Why it matters for readers: If you use Android, this may make installing apps from approved third‑party stores simpler and more like the Play Store.
- Google has started accepting applications for its Registered App Stores programme so third‑party marketplaces can offer one‑tap app installations.12
- Approved stores can perform background updates and show download progress indicators and must submit their full app catalogs and updates for ongoing malware scanning.12
- Stores must pass identity checks and pay an annual registration fee to participate, and the status is available only in select regions outside the US.12
- Google said support will roll out to some Android devices later this year and will be available on devices running Android 17 QPR2 and higher starting December 1, 2026.12
