Redwood and Rivian expand EV battery recycling partnership

Why it matters for readers: It means fewer batteries end up as waste and more of the valuable metals inside them are reused.
- The expanded deal will install recycling of Rivian’s battery production scrap back into manufacturing, reducing waste and cost versus virgin materials.1
- Retired Rivian batteries will be repurposed for stationary energy projects before eventual recycling.1
- Redwood aims to recover about 99% of critical materials (nickel, cobalt, copper and lithium) from retired packs.1
- The partnership extension will start at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois factory and could expand to other Rivian-owned sites.1
- Earlier in April, Rivian had already agreed to 10 MWh of energy storage using repurposed Rivian battery packs with Redwood.1
