FSSAI issues show-cause notices to BigBasket, Flipkart and Gemini over oil claims

Why it matters for readers: It explains why some health claims on food products are banned and why regulators monitor online promotions.
- FSSAI flagged promotional claims that the rice bran oil “reduces bad cholesterol and maintains/increases good cholesterol” and noted a claim of “10,000+ PPM Natural Oryzanol”.1
- Associating edible vegetable oils with heart-health benefits violates the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, the regulator said.1
- Show-cause notices were issued to ecommerce platforms BigBasket and Flipkart as well as manufacturer Gemini Edibles & Fats India after reviewing digital promotions and storefronts.1
- FSSAI also alleged Gemini was selling food products on its own ecommerce site without a valid Central Licence covering ecommerce activity.1
