Why it matters for readers: It explains why some email apps may stop working and how IT admins can temporarily fix them.

  • EWS is an API used by apps such as Outlook desktop add-ins, older Outlook for Windows, Apple Mail/Calendar on macOS, and other apps to access mailbox items.1
  • Admins can re-enable EWS in the Microsoft 365 admin center by unchecking 'Block your entire organization from using EWS' on the Baseline Security Mode page.1
  • Alternatively, Exchange Online PowerShell can be used with the Set-OrganizationConfig -EWSEnabled $true command to re-enable EWS, which should take effect within about four hours.1
  • Microsoft previously said it will start blocking EWS by default on October 1, 2026, but will allow temporary access via an app allowlist until the final shutdown on April 1, 2027.1
