Math group urges researchers to reject OpenAI’s mass release of papers

Why it matters for readers: If you follow AI and science, this shows experts are worried about how and whether AI should produce and publish new mathematics.
- AHM said mathematicians did not ask for OpenAI’s work and criticised the company over alleged plagiarism, copyright infringement and trademark dilution.1
- OpenAI published 722 manuscripts covering 372 groups of results and claimed the work addressed hundreds of open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science.1
- The manuscripts were posted to a GitHub repository with protocols for revisions and citations, according to OpenAI.1
- OpenAI said it is consulting AGMAI at the Institute for Advanced Study to help develop best practices for releasing AI-generated mathematical research.1
