Lawmakers ask FAA to pause AI tool used in DC-area flight management
Why it matters for readers: It matters because people worry AI in air traffic control must be proven safe before it helps manage flights where mistakes can be deadly.
- Over two dozen lawmakers, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Don Beyer, sent a letter urging the FAA to pause the AI pilot project in the Washington area.1
- The lawmakers said they have not seen safety evaluation and testing reports nor evidence of training for aviation safety personnel on the tool.1
- The letter, signed also by Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representatives Jamie Raskin, Raja Krishnamoorthi and Kweisi Mfume, requested an answer by Oct. 19.1
- The FAA began using a software-based AI tool last month that uses predictive analytics to help manage flights.1
- In June the FAA awarded an $875 million, 12-year contract to Air Space Intelligence for a system called Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories (SMART).1
