Finland orders halt to Google clearing at two data-centre sites

Why it matters for readers: It explains why data-centre construction can be controversial when environmental impact checks aren’t finished.
- Google, through Tuike Finland Oy, felled about 330 hectares of forest in Muhos and logged just under 200 hectares in Kajaani before completing environmental reviews.1
- The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) issued a notice to immediately suspend preparatory measures that significantly change the environment at the two sites.1
- LVV set a deadline of 23 October to suspend the work and asked Google to submit a written explanation within a week.1
- The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is still ongoing and is expected to be completed later this year, according to reports.1
