Codex CLI installs persistent, self-updating background daemon by default
Why it matters for readers: It's important to check what developer tools install and run in the background so you know about disk use, network traffic, and updates.
- Opening an interactive Codex CLI session (v0.157.0) launches a persistent background daemon process (codex app-server --managed-daemon).1
- The CLI copies the entire platform package (~374 MB) into ~/.codex/packages/app-server-daemon/releases/<version>/ and runs the backend from that copy, decoupling it from the installed CLI package.1
- A detached updater (pid-update-loop) checks for updates five minutes after start and then hourly, downloading new releases and restarting the backend; updates can force-kill active turns after a 60s drain budget.1
- The daemon inherits and pins the environment variables of the session that first started it (for example HTTPS_PROXY), so later sessions may use the original session's proxy settings.1
