   Judge rules Anthropic used pirated books to train Claude, approves $1.5B settlement

   A federal judge found Anthropic illegally scraped books by Stanford and other authors to train its Claude models and approved a $1.5 billion settlement in the Bartz v. Anthropic case. The ruling barred creating a permanent central library from pirated works but also endorsed certain AI training on books as fair use.
