   Rio Tinto and Rondo plan giant hot‑brick heat battery at Yarwun refinery

   Rio Tinto and Rondo Energy have begun engineering and design work on a large thermal energy storage project at the Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone, Queensland. The planned heat‑brick battery aims to store cheap midday electricity as heat to supply steam, potentially meeting about 5% of Yarwun’s steam needs and cutting roughly 67,000 tonnes of direct CO2 annually.
