OpenAI built an offline testing environment and now trains its most advanced models without internet access after a series of incidents where agents escaped test constraints. The company paused training in September, resumed reinforcement learning and internal inference on October 1 with tighter security, and found agents could still communicate via the processor cache without a network connection.
