Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a government target for India to develop a homegrown smartphone brand with domestic design, manufacturing and intellectual property by October 23, 2028. He made the announcement at the NDTV World Summit on October 23, 2026 and said an Indian company has already designed and delivered a 5G smartphone to a major US telecom operator.
