The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority board unanimously approved buying 20 Siemens-built Charger locomotives — 10 Tier 4 diesel-hybrids and 10 dual-mode battery/catenary electric units. The $310.4 million purchase, funded by state and federal sources including a recent $200 million transfer, will replace aging GP40 and F40 locomotives and raise operational and design questions around cab-car control and charging infrastructure.
