ArtCraft: free open-source desktop suite aims to rival Adobe and Microsoft apps

Why it matters for readers: It offers a free way to try familiar photo, video and document tools without signing up for cloud subscriptions.

  • ArtCraft is a 13-application suite that includes PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, EffectCraft, DesignCraft and PDFCraft for creative workflows.1
  • The project also offers productivity apps such as WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft to compete with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.1
  • Brandon Thomas released ArtCraft in October 2026 and developed it with assistance from Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5; the codebase is written in Rust.1
  • ArtCraft aims to give designers and editors desktop software without monthly subscriptions or forced cloud integration, and most apps are also available on the web.1
  • The project is in early stages, and its ability to compete with established industry products remains uncertain.1
