esp32sim: ESP32 firmware emulator in Rust runs in the browser
Why it matters for readers: It lets you run real ESP32 programs in the browser to explore how the chips and peripherals work.
- esp32sim is an instruction-level ESP32 emulator implemented in Rust and released under the MIT license.1
- It emulates four Espressif SoCs across both CPU architectures: Xtensa (classic LX6/LX7) and RISC‑V (C3, C6), booting the real mask ROM and 2nd-stage bootloader with unmodified application images.1
- The emulator models peripherals including GPIO, UART, timers, displays (ST7735, ST7789), WS2812, camera and audio, plus a virtual Wi-Fi AP with WPA2, DHCP, NAT and HTTPS support.1
- Performance uses a block interpreter with an AArch64 JIT for higher speed (~150–240 MInstr/s reported) and plain interpreter for other cores, with extensive decoder check matching reported.1
