Google open-sources TorchTPU to run PyTorch on its TPUs

Why it matters for readers: It shows big cloud companies want developers to run AI on their chips, not just Nvidia GPUs.
- Google released TorchTPU as an open-source project to let PyTorch apps run on TPUs with a simple configuration change, no rewriting required.1
- Amazon this week released TorchNeuron to port PyTorch apps to its Trainium chips and AWS, a similar effort to Google’s announcement.1
- These moves are positioned as efforts to challenge Nvidia’s dominant position where most AI apps are written by default to run on Nvidia GPUs.1
- PyTorch, the popular open-source toolkit used by a large share of AI apps, was originally developed by Meta and is now managed by the Linux Foundation.1
