DoT orders telecoms to show caller names on 4G/5G from November 1, 2026

Why it matters for readers: It explains why your phone may soon show names for unknown numbers on 4G/5G calls, improving call identification.
- DoT instructed all authorised TSPs to enable CNAP across 4G and newer-generation networks from November 1, 2026.123
- The CNAP rollout will be enabled by default and show the caller name stored in the originating operator's subscriber database alongside the number.13
- Callers who have activated calling line identification restriction (CLIR) will be exempt from having their names displayed.1
- Implementation on 2G, 3G networks and landlines (PSTNs) will be examined separately and is not part of the November 1 rollout.123
- The DoT amendment also revises the definition of calling line identification (CLI) to include the caller's name as recorded in operator records.1
