Researchers say Israeli ad tech firm heavily targeted Starlink users for surveillance
Why it matters for readers: It explains a real-world way that ads can be used to find and monitor people using satellite internet services.
- TrendAI, a unit of Trend Micro, found an ad tech entity was one of the biggest sources of ads shown to Starlink users and likely used them to surveil or geolocate those users.1
- Six people familiar with the matter said the ad tech company TrendAI codenamed 'Shadow-Earth-79' is Discover-Tech, an Israeli firm.1
- Discover-Tech was reportedly the No. 1 bidder on Starlink traffic in more than 100 countries, including several where Starlink is banned or restricted.1
- TrendAI published a report on October 15 about targeting of Starlink users but did not name Discover-Tech in that report.1
- SpaceX and Discover-Tech did not respond to requests for comment, and TrendAI did not directly name the company in its public report.1
